Hanwha Aerospace has signed an agreement with Poland’s Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. (HSW) to supply key chassis parts for the Krab Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH). Estimated at around $280 million, the deal covers the delivery of components—such as powerpacks—for 87 units of the 155mm/52-calibre Krab howitzers between 2026 and 2028. This artillery system, jointly developed with Hanwha, plays a central role in Poland’s defense capabilities.
This contract strengthens the ongoing collaboration between Hanwha Aerospace and HSW, with the supplied components playing a crucial role in the operational performance of the Krab SPH. The deal not only enhances the capabilities of the Polish military but also underscores the continuing importance of defense partnerships between South Korea and Poland.
Among the prominent attendees at the event were Wojciech Kdziera, President of HSW; Arkadiusz Bąk, President of PGZ S.A.; Billy Boo-hwan Lee, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace Europe; and Hanwha Aerospace President and CEO Jaeil Son. The gathering highlighted the enduring defense partnership between Poland and South Korea.
Mr. Son reflected on the successful partnership, noting that it began with the first Krab program about a decade ago. “The success of those 120 units demonstrated not only the integration of technologies from both sides but also became the cornerstone of an ironclad relationship between our two nations,” he said.
Hanwha Aerospace’s cooperation with HSW on the Krab program has evolved since 2014 when the company first supplied 120 K9 Howitzer chassis parts. Over the years, the partnership has expanded, with two additional contracts signed in 2022 and 2023 for a combined total of 364 K9 units. The ongoing collaboration reflects Hanwha’s growing role in Poland’s defense sector, with future plans including the pursuit of a separate contract for 300 more howitzers in line with a 2022 framework agreement.
