AI-Driven Smart Factory: LG Innotek Collaborates with Intel for Next-Gen Vision Inspection

LG Innotek is taking a major step toward enhancing its smart factory capabilities through a new partnership with Intel. On April 8, the company officially sealed the collaboration in Magok, Seoul. The partnership is centered around improving product quality by implementing AI-powered vision inspection systems across LG Innotek’s production lines. By shifting from traditional manual inspections to AI-driven solutions, the goal is to increase both operational efficiency and precision in defect detection.

 

The AI-driven vision inspection system, powered by Intel’s integrated graphics processing unit (iGPU), will be implemented across LG Innotek’s manufacturing lines. This solution is designed to automate defect detection, reducing reliance on manual inspections and significantly lowering defect rates. Both companies believe this partnership will boost manufacturing accuracy and bring greater automation to the production environment.

Intel’s AI-powered vision inspection solution, which uses cameras and artificial intelligence, will be deployed across all of LG Innotek’s production lines. The system’s primary objective is to detect defects with greater accuracy and consistency than manual inspections. The AI technology, integrated with Intel’s i-GPU (graphics processing unit), facilitates seamless AI implementation without the need for costly external GPUs or additional hardware. This solution is expected to increase inspection accuracy to nearly 100%, drastically reducing the defect rate in production.

 

Building on this success, LG Innotek is set to expand the system to additional facilities, including its Gumi Plant 4, which produces advanced semiconductor components like flip-chip ball grid array substrates. 

 

The implementation of AI-driven inspection systems is expected to yield significant improvements in both quality and efficiency. LG Innotek forecasts that AI learning time will be reduced by 1.5 times, enabling faster adaptation and continuous improvement of the technology. This reduction in learning time, combined with the system’s heightened precision, is anticipated to bring substantial cost savings while enhancing overall production processes.

 

According to Lee Sang-seok, the head of LG Innotek’s Production Innovation Center, the collaboration with Intel will accelerate the company’s journey toward creating smart factories. The integration of AI will not only increase the accuracy of product inspections but also drive further innovation across LG Innotek’s operations, enhancing its ability to deliver superior value to its customers. The partnership with Intel is seen as a critical step in LG Innotek’s ongoing efforts to lead the way in next-generation manufacturing technologies.

 

Kim Hyun-Joon, Head of Intel Korea’s Sales Division, stated that Intel is at the forefront of digital transformation in manufacturing with its advanced AI vision solutions. He emphasized that this technology will not only benefit LG Innotek but also help other companies enhance production quality and improve cost efficiency. Both companies plan to continue strengthening their cooperation to accelerate the adoption of intelligent manufacturing systems.
