LIG Nex1(CEO Kim Ji-chan) will participate in the ‘Egypt Defence Expo 2023 (EDEX)’ held in Cairo, Egypt, from December 4th to 7th.
EDEX, held every two years, is Egypt’s largest international defense exhibition, and this year marks its third edition. Officially sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Defense, the General Authority for Military Production, and the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI), the exhibition attracts the participation of more than 400 defense industry companies.
LIG Nex1’s participation in EDEX marks its first entry into the Egyptian defense market, dominated by Russian and European weapon systems. The significance lies in making a bold move into a market where Egypt has emerged as the third-largest arms importer among the top 15 countries from 2017 to 2021, holding a 5.7% market share, according to the ‘2022 World Defense Market Yearbook’ published by the Defense Technology Promotion Research Institute. LIG Nex1 plans to showcase its advanced technologies, including the KGGB air-to-ground guided missile, FA-50 AESA radar, and anti-tank guided missile Hyunmoo, targeting the host country and neighboring nations.
The infantry medium-range guided weapon ‘Hyunmoo’ is a third-generation anti-tank guided missile developed to effectively counter enemy tanks’ threats. It applies the ‘Fire and Forget’ autonomous guidance method, where the gunner detects and aims at the tank’s heat image, and after launch, the missile autonomously uses the infrared image to find and track the target. Moreover, it can attack the front of enemy tanks and areas with relatively thin armor.
KGGB (Korean Guided GPS Bomb) was developed by LIG Nex1 under the leadership of the Defense Science Research Institute and can be mounted on various aircraft, including the FA-50. Equipped with a ‘medium-range GPS guidance kit,’ it is capable of long-range attacks and precision attacks in all weather conditions, day and night. It also has the ability to counter GPS jamming.
The AESA radar, which significantly enhances the air-to-air combat performance of domestically produced fighter jets, is considered a crucial aviation payload. Since 2006, our military and government have been promoting the domestic production of AESA radar for fighter aircraft. LIG Nex1, as a prototype company, has participated in this initiative, conducting research and development under the auspices of the Defense Science Research Institute for about 15 years, resulting in the creation of the FA-50 AESA Radar Prototype. The successful development of a domestic AESA radar is expected to provide a competitive edge in the global market when exporting fighter jets in the future.
LIG Nex1 CEO Kim Ji-chan stated, “LIG Nex1 has been exploring various collaborative projects with local defense companies, including government agencies, to expand into the Middle East and Africa defense markets.” He added, “Through EDEX this time, we will showcase the technological competitiveness that LIG Nex1 has secured and solidify our position as a global defense company.”
LIG Nex1, headquartered in the defense industry-dense Pangyo Techno Valley, has steadily grown in the defense industry for 34 years. Since its establishment in 1976 under the banner of autonomous national defense, LIG Nex1 has actively participated in weapon system projects in close collaboration with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the Defense Science Research Institute, and each branch of the military. The company has played a leading role in the development and domestication of advanced weapon systems in various fields such as Precision Guided Munitions (PGM), Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I), Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), Electronic Warfare (EW), and Avionics.
