Hyundai Motor Group has launched the Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED), a four-wheel small mobility platform having autonomous and controlled robotic applications. The South Korean automaker announced the launch on Thursday.

The MobED has a flat and rectangular body running on a wheelbase bottom. The model is making news for its innovative design suitable for a wide range of environments. The independent suspension in the model offers optimal stable movement and optimal body posture.

With this, the platform can ride freely on any terrain and operate in complex situations. The tech secret to its stable movements lies in auto adjustment in its wheelbase and directional steering, making uneven road rides smoother.  Dong Jin-Hyun, head of Hyundai Motor Group’s robotics lab, spoke to the media on the day of launch. “We have developed the MobED platform to overcome the limitations of existing indoor guide and service robots while maximizing usability in cities by dramatically improving the platform’s overall mobility.”

The Eccentric Wheel Drive system is indeed the most highlighted feature of the platform. Innovative technologies such as high-tech steering capabilities and adjustable suspension systems for level control, stable posture are additional eccentric features that offer accuracy and power.

The MobED wheels are smartly designed where each wheel arrangement has individual power, maneuvering control system powering in-place rotation. Consequently, the system receives signals from all directions and operates the platform accordingly. The feature is more useful on narrow roads and complex environments.

The posture control system in the platform adjusts the height of each wheel as per the terrain requirement and stabilizes the level for optimum stability. MobED has 12-inch pneumatic tires that absorb the instability to control the bumps and vibrations on the terrain.

The unique small mobility platform by Hyundai is compact and weighs 50 kg. Its dimensions include 67cm, 60 cm having 33 cm height. The 65cm-wide wheelbase can stabilize the platform even in high-speed motion. The system can bring down the wheel to 45 cm when required to lower its speed for complex environments. MobED can ride at a maximum speed of 30 km/h. Its 2kWh strong battery enables it to operate for around four hours.

In the recent media interview, Dong spoke of where the platform will be headed in the future. “We are also looking ahead to assess how potential users of MobED will further expand their needs and use for this type of technology,” he added.
