LG Display, one of the world’s top display technology innovators, revealed the winners of the first OLEDs Go! Competition. LG Display had also been operating the competition since November 2020 in collaboration with the UK-based design publication, Dezeen.
Highlighting OLED’s Essential Qualities
The OLEDs Go! Competition brief encouraged talented participants to create innovative design concepts that showcase OLED technology’s most important qualities. Some of these features include the OLED panels’ bendability, lightness, thinness, and transparency.
Furthermore, the two companies allowed the participating designers to cultivate their creativity using LG Display’s bendable, lightweight, rollable, slim, and transparent OLED panels. Separately, LG Display earned the highest SID award, the Display of the Year, for its OLED display technologies in May.
In addition to being easy on the eyes, LG Display designed the OLED displays to be more environment-friendly. This move could effectively prompt global customers to adopt healthier day-to-day operations and employ better sustainable solutions.
“Based on the unprecedented scalability of OLED, LG Display is continuing to push OLED into the mainstream through its strategy of open innovation,” said Dr. Chang-Ho Oh, Executive VP and Head of LG Display’s TV Business Unit.
Competition Standouts
LG Display and Dezeen also selected five finalists among more than 200 entries from over 50 countries. Moreover, the partners awarded the winners based on how well they integrated their creativity into the endless capabilities of LG Display’s OLED technology.
The OLEDs Go! Competition jury presented the first place and best design to the display concept, Scroll. Scroll’s designers, Jisu Yun and Richard Bone, outperformed four other finalists and claimed the top prize. Also, the two designers applied LG Display’s transparent OLED panel to develop a multipurpose and elegant design.
In particular, the device took inspiration for its slender form from an open scroll figure, optimizing the OLED technology’s slimness. Besides seamlessly functioning as a digital display when activated, Scroll doubles as a wide physical shelf when not in use. LG Display also highly praised Scroll for demonstrating how OLED panels could incorporate futuristic design into limited home interior spaces.
Signal, an OLED television with a foldable design that opens and closes like a book, received second place. Additionally, the OLEDs Go! Competition recognized Signal’s book-like form and ambient lighting for utilizing OLED panels’ bendability innovatively.
Three OLED design concepts shared third place, including Flag.R, Console, and Trollie. Flag.R is a screen that enables users to view media content in perfect aspect ratio by moving from side to side. Meanwhile, Console contains an OLED display that arches over users’ beds. Lastly, Trollie includes an OLED panel-equipped trolley, allowing users to move the device from room to room freely.
