South Korean electronic component company LG Innotek revealed it had created the world’s first next-generation Wi-Fi 6E module for automobiles. Amid the growing competition on automated driving systems, the company actively develops and promotes new Wi-Fi module technologies. With the automotive Wi-Fi 6E module development, LG Innotek reinforces its foothold in the global vehicle communication interface module market.
The automotive Wi-Fi 6E module is a component that provides near-field wireless communication and improves communication functioning, strength, and applicability. LG Innotek’s breakthrough product module enables a connection between in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems, external routers, and internal smart devices. Through the module-provided connection, passengers can transfer infotainment content from their smartphones and into the vehicle’s display and audio systems.

In addition to being the fastest automotive Wi-Fi component yet, the Wi-Fi 6E (6th Generation Extended) uses a 6-gigahertz bandwidth to generate a data transfer speed faster than existing Wi-Fi 5s. Along with the 6-gigahertz bandwidth, the new module also supports 2-gigahertz and 5-gigahertz bands for higher frequencies.
According to LG Innotek, the module has an ultra-fast 1.2-gigabit per second transmission speed, improving data sending and receiving. The automotive Wi-Fi 6E module only needs 2 milliseconds to establish network connections, eliminating buffering for high-definition videos and movies. Users can attach the module to various vehicle components, including the smart antenna and the audio-video navigation system.
Aside from minimizing communication interference, the new module provides passengers with high-resolution in-vehicle displays of augmented and virtual reality games. Developers equipped the module with a communications chipset and a radio frequency (RF) circuit that supplies multiple smooth Internet connectivity.
Moreover, the automotive Wi-Fi 6E is highly resistant to extreme temperatures and capable of withstanding heat from data transmission operations. With its slim and compact design, the new module is compatible with other existing components and requires no design changes.
Due to the growing self-driving technologies, LG Innotek aims to catch up with the global automotive component industry. In 2022, LG Innotek will begin the module’s mass production and commercialization with promotion support from German semiconductor firm Infineon Technologies. Based on Techno Systems Research’s estimates, the worldwide automotive wireless communication technology demand would grow by 70% in 2025.
