SK Engineering & Construction (SK E&C), a subsidiary of the SK Group, announced on Wednesday that it would join forces with Veea, a US-based edge computing company, to develop and operate a smart safety platform for mobile devices.

Ahn Jae-hyun, SK E&C CEO, and Allen Salmasi, Veea CEO, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to make combined efforts to develop the Smart Safety Platform system through an online meeting.

The Smart Safety Platform includes a cohesive safety management system for construction workers, employees, and supervisors. The system collects and analyzes big data and calculates risks related to industrial accidents. The users’ mobile devices receive the analyzed data and risk information in real-time.

Construction sites often face obstacles in setting up access to the internet since wired access entails a stage of development in construction. Additionally, the installation of wireless access becomes challenging in underground worksites. SK E&C expects Veea’s edge computing technology to manage and deal with these difficulties.

Construction Safety and Social Value

Under the partnership, SK E&C would establish a network system that would offer safety information even in the most challenging construction site. The company would apply its Smart Safety Platform abroad after acquiring a thorough knowledge of the safety management system.

With the Veea Edge Platform, safety procedures required at construction sites come at a lower cost and higher safety standards. Adding an early warning system and a real-time monitoring tool could increase safety, prevent disasters, and save lives.

Edge computing technology brings data processing and storage nearer to required locations at the edge of the network coverage. The data does not transmit to the central cloud server, which makes processing shorter while saving bandwidth.

Ahn Jae-hyun, SK E&C CEO, stated that the company would continue building platform services to enhance construction safety and social value. The partnership with Veea would bring significant improvement in the safety of construction sites.

SK E&C celebrated a completion ceremony last Tuesday for Bloom SK Fuel Cell’s Plant located in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. Bloom SK Fuel Cell resulted from the SK E&C and U.S. Bloom Energy joint venture, which focus on producing solid oxide fuel cells.

SK E&C also signed a construction agreement to build a 6.4-megawatt fuel cell system for an Equinix data center in California.
