Samsung Electronics Co. introduced on Tuesday a new consumer PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive (SSD) called the SSD 980 PRO. The company revealed its latest 980 PRO designed for intensive applications, extensive data, and heavy graphics for games. Samsung would release the SSD 980 Pro globally this month.

“Over the years, Samsung has continuously challenged the limits of high-speed flash memory storage solutions.”

-Dr. Mike Mang, Samsung Electronics vice president of Memory Brand Product Biz, in a press release

He added that the new SSD reflects the company’s goal of providing excellent products for its consumers.

Higher Performance and Reliability

The Samsung SSD 980 PRO works two times faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs. Consumers operating with 4K and 8K contents, along with graphics-heavy games, could count on the SSD’s high-speed flash memory storage.

Samsung uniquely designed all the critical components, including Elpis controller, V-NAND, and DRAM, to deliver the full potential of the PCIe 4.0. The SSD offers a read and write speed of up to 7,000 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 5,000 MB/s, respectively. Its random read and write speeds also generate 1,000K input/output operations per second (IOPS).

The 980 PRO also comes with excellent thermal control solutions that ensure reliability coupled with its enhanced performance functions.

Samsung’s 980 PRO utilizes a nickel coating on the controller and a heat spreader label on the backside for efficient thermal management. These advanced heat-dispersing functions give the drive its slim and compact form. The Dynamic Thermal Guard technology controls the drive’s temperature at optimal levels to minimize performance fluctuations.

The Samsung PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD would come in different models like one terabyte (TB), 500 gigabytes (GB), and 250 GB models. Consumers could purchase these models worldwide in October. Samsung would later add the 2TB model by the end of this year. The 250 GB SSD 980 PRO model’s suggested retail price starts at $89.99.
