The South Korean Government is taking cyber security seriously for the impending 5G era and will dedicate $6.2M USD (710B KRW) in the next four years.

Korea is going to develop ‘Intelligent 5G Core Network Security Technology’ which is designed to prevent DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks and try to prevent damage to major mobile telecommunication networks.

Korea Internet Development Agency (KISA) announced its support for recruiting organizations that jointly carry out ‘development of intelligent 5G core network abnormal attack detection and response technologies’ by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Information and Communication (IITP). KISA is planning to jointly carry out R&D in various fields such as security standards and vulnerabilities of 5G network with 4 to 5 businesses and schools.

“This project is major for information protection to inspect security in advance, before 5G mobile telecommunication technologies mature.”

To this end, it is going to collect traffic exclusively for 5G network, control and monitor security, study security vulnerabilities, develop international standards, develop intelligent 5G network attack based on machine learning, and develop technologies that detect and respond to abnormal traffic.

There is a high chance that 5G network will have vulnerabilities that are known in current 2G-4G network environment. A research team led by Professor Kim Yong-dae of KAIST introduced a paper containing 51 serious vulnerabilities that could occur in LTE networks.
