Recent reports from South Korea have ignited anticipation among automotive enthusiasts, suggesting the imminent debut of Hyundai‘s highly anticipated N74 hydrogen supercar. Building upon the striking N Vision 74 concept, this vehicle promises to redefine the supercar landscape with its innovative hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain.
Hyundai’s plans to develop the world’s first hydrogen supercar is a response to the global automotive industry’s increasing focus on carbon neutrality and the advancement of propulsion and battery technologies. It is the new era of highly advanced zero-emission vehicles. According to a report, Hyundai is expected to introduce the N74 in 2026, marking a significant milestone in automotive innovation and sustainability.
Suppliers have reportedly confirmed their involvement in developing Hyundai’s N74 hydrogen supercar, indicating that the process is underway. Components for test vehicles are expected to be completed in the coming months. The N Vision 74 concept, which debuted in 2022, is the foundation for the project, combining retro design elements from the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe with futuristic hydrogen fuel-cell technology.
The N Vision 74 concept showcased a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain capable of delivering 500 kW and 900 Nm to the rear wheels, differentiating it from the current crop of all-wheel-drive electric supercars. The production version is expected to match at least the concept’s top speed of 250 km/h and deliver a range of over 600 km.Â
If the production version adheres to this vision, it will offer a rear-wheel-drive layout with enhanced performance, having a combined output of over 775 horsepower and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just three seconds.Â
Hyundai’s exclusive car has a limited production run of just 200 units, with a starting price of around 500 million South Korean won (approximately $366,000). This makes the N74 a premium offering, surpassing the price point of competitors like Aston Martin, Porsche, and Lamborghini. The unique hydrogen fuel-cell technology and limited availability will likely make the N74 a highly coveted collector’s item.
Although Hyundai has not officially confirmed the N74’s production, several indicators suggest the project is advancing. Last year, the company filed multiple patents related to a high-performance hydrogen fuel-cell system distinct from the one used in the Nexo SUV.Â
Additionally, Hyundai’s recent trademark for the N74 name and strategic patents hint at integrating a hydrogen fuel-cell system with the N Vision 74 concept. These developments, combined with the latest supplier reports, strongly suggest that Hyundai is laying the groundwork for its hydrogen supercar.
If these reports hold true, the N74 will aid Hyundai in entering the elite circle of supercar manufacturers. The hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain is a bold step away from conventional combustion engines and battery-electric systems. With this, the company will glimpse a sustainable yet thrilling future for high-performance vehicles.
