SK Telecom announced its strategy to spread 5G ‘Smart Factory’ at Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province on 20th.

On one side of the factory, robot arm picked out parts 10cm in diameter that pass over the conveyor belt. It is a process of finding products that have defects separately.

The work originally had to be viewed one by one by people. SK Telecom applied 5G-AI machine vision that utilizes 5G mobile telecommunication and AI-technologies to manufacturing process. Myeonghwa, an auto parts maker in Banwol Industrial Complex, was introduced for the first time in Korea on August 1.

As the part passes through the conveyor belt, a 12-megapixel camera takes 24 pictures from various directions. When a picture is sent to a cloud server through a 5G network, AI reads the picture and checks for any defects and informs the result, and filters out products with defective robotic arms. It takes less than eight seconds to finish the process.

SK Telecom announced that it will provide the so-called ‘all-in-one package’ such as 5G network and data analytics platform so that manufacturing facilities can easily switch to smart plants.

It is planning to standardize 5G-based technologies and encourage small and medium-sized businesses to participate by reducing the scale of construction equipment.
