SK Telecom (SKT) hosts "ai.x 2020: Human.Machine.Experience.Together" focusing on the role and direction of AI development in a post-COVID-19 era.

SK Telecom (SKT) on the Thursday held this year’s “ai.x 2020” conference under the theme “Human.Machine.Experience.Together.” The online event focused on the role and direction of artificial intelligence (AI) development in overcoming current and future crises.

SK Telecom’s third ai.x 2020 conference included local and foreign experts in artificial intelligence (AI). They discussed various changes and experiences brought about by the global coronavirus pandemic. They explored ways on how AI could help in the post-COVID-19 era.

Discussing AI Utilization Across Various Fields

The first session, called “Fireside Chat” discussed the role of AI in a post-COVID-19 society. It included notable speakers such as best-selling author, Robust AI founder, and New York Professor Gary Marcus, CEO of Allen Institute for AI and Washington University professor Oren Etzioni, Apple’s AI Secretary Siri developer Tom Gruber, and MIT-IBM Watson AI scientist Kim Yoon.

Meanwhile, AI experts from South Korea’s leading companies discussed “AI for the New Normal Life.” The session included Samsung Electronics’ AI Development Group head Woo Gyeong-gu, Kakao Brain CTO Kim Nam-ju, Hyundai Motor’s AIRS Company head Kim Jeong-hee, and Shinhan Bank’s AI Center head Jang Hyun-ki. The speakers revealed AI technology, each company prepared for use in the future.

Additionally, the conference included a presentation on the status of AI utilization in the medical and healthcare field. KAIST professor Jaeseung Jeong’s discussed brain-inspired AI, while Asan Medical Center professor Namkug Kim talked about AI deep learning applied to medicine after COVID-19.

SKT presented in-depth discussions of various uses of its AI technologies, such as its NUGU Carecall, overcoming subway congestion, and a communications robot “CommBot.” The conference also brushed on topics such as AI deep learning, smart manufacturing, big data analysis, 3D modeling, and meta-learning.

The ai.x 2020 conference broadcasted in real-time through the event’s website. Those who intend to view the contents of the lecture could also check the website until September 12. An edited version “ai.x 2020 replay” of the conference, complete with Korean subtitles and additional content, would be available to the public on September 25.
