SK Telecom (SKT) took a deep dive into the nuances of 6G standardization to promote international collaboration during an exclusive 6G special session at the ‘SK Tech Summit 2023.’ This two-day event was held at COEX in Seoul from November 16th to 17th. It served as a platform for in-depth discussions on the ongoing developments in the standardization of 6G technology.
During the 6G special session at the SK Tech Summit 2023, SK Telecom (SKT) highlighted key advancements in technology. The session covered the 6G Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) Development in February 2023. It also covered the inaugural 6G white paper Publication by a domestic mobile communication operator.
Additionally, it included on-device AI-based power consumption reduction technology and the status and evolution of open LAN technology. These insights offered a comprehensive overview of the core technologies and the development direction for the 6G era.
The session at the SK Tech Summit 2023 featured the participation of global mobile operators like NTT DOCOMO and Bell Canada. Takehiro Nakamura, Chief Standardization Officer (CSO) of NTT DOCOMO, delivered a keynote speech, sharing insights into promising 6G technologies and the collaborative achievements stemming from the strategic partnership between SKT and NTT DOCOMO.
SKT said, “NGMN’s white paper presented 6G requirements and design considerations from an operator’s perspective,” and added, “Zavan Erpanian, technical director at Bell Canada, is the lead author.”
In recent initiatives, SK Telecom (SKT) has been actively gearing up for the new 6G era. One notable participation was in the ‘6G Brooklyn Summit’ hosted in New York, USA, where SKT delivered a keynote speech addressing crucial aspects such as ‘Killer service’ and the acquisition of low-frequency broadband frequencies essential for developing this technologies.
Javan Erfanian, a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Canada and the principal author of the 6G white paper by the Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance, shared insights into NGMN’s 6G-related endeavors during the SK Tech Summit 2023.
The NGMN Alliance’s 6G white paper, a collaborative effort involving around 40 companies, including SKT, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO, and Vodafone. SK Telecom has consistently advocated for collaborative efforts across Korea, Japan, Europe, and the United States to ensure a successful and cohesive evolution into the telecom landscape.
This includes involvement in groups such as IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) Global Forum, Open RAN Industry Alliance (ORIA), O-RAN Alliance, 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), and the World Radiocommunication Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The company also hosted the O-RAN Alliance face-to-face meetings in Asia scheduled for June 2024, emphasizing the collaborative approach necessary for the successful evolution of 6G technology.
