Swift Navigation, a precise positioning solutions provider for automotive, IoT, and mobile applications, has partnered with SK Telecom (SKT). The collaboration is expected to accelerate the deployment of AI-driven location-based products in South Korea.

Both companies plan to leverage Swift’s expertise in precision positioning technology and SKT’s extensive network infrastructure to bring advanced location-based solutions to the Korean market.

As part of their collaboration, SK Telecom and Swift have developed and are now jointly operating a carrier-grade network to deliver Swift’s Skylark® Precise Positioning Service across South Korea.

Skylark, a cloud-based solution, enhances the accuracy of standard GNSS positioning by up to 100 times, reducing it from meters to centimeters. This service plays a role in over 8 million connected and autonomous vehicles and devices, including ADAS-enabled cars, drones, vehicle tracking systems, and robotic equipment.

The partnership between SK Telecom and Swift aims to establish a telecommunications-grade network infrastructure to provide Skylark®’s precise positioning services nationwide in Korea. Skylark’s services serve as an element for a wide range of applications, including self-driving vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and various robotic systems, contributing to the advancement of location-based technologies in the region.

Skylark, certified to meet stringent functional safety and cybersecurity standards for road vehicles, serves as a critical component for autonomous driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). SK Telecom conducted a 24-day, 8,000-kilometer drive across Korea to demonstrate its capabilities, deploying Skylark in-vehicle receivers and smartphones. During the showcase, Skylark maintained lane-level positioning integrity for over 99% of the drive using vehicle receivers and 92.61% using smartphones on open roads. Impressively, the in-vehicle devices maintained lane-level positioning integrity 99.99999% of the time, showcasing Skylark’s exceptional performance compared to standard GNSS technology.

SK Telecom plans to offer precise Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning services for various mobility platforms, including Urban Air Mobility (UAM), autonomous vehicles, and smartphones, through its collaboration with Swift Navigation.

Takki Yu, Vice President and Head of the Infra Tech Office at SK Telecom, talked about the company’s plans to work on AI technology and delivering innovative and high-integrity positioning solutions to customers in South Korea.

Skylark, already available across North America, Europe, and other parts of Asia, serves as the foundation for production deployments for over 20 automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers, as well as numerous companies manufacturing robots and developing location-based products.

Backed by integrations with components from more than 20 chipset, module, and receiver manufacturers, Skylark offers high configurability to meet diverse requirements for accuracy, coverage, data transmission, and power consumption, catering to the unique needs of various industries.

Holger Ippach, Executive Vice President of Product and Marketing at Swift Navigation, emphasized the two companies’ shared vision and expressed satisfaction with SK Telecom’s partnership.
