South Korean internet service provider SK Broadband has introduced the nation’s inaugural dedicated line service seamlessly integrating Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

Quantum secure communication relies on the intrinsic characteristics of quantum mechanics, notably uncertainty where it can’t be cloned. It comprises two primary facets: Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Quantum Resistant Cryptography (PQC). QKD is a hardware-centric methodology in which both the sender and receiver possess their QKD devices to generate concurrent encryption keys. It ensures an impenetrable shield against intrusion, courtesy of the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics.

Conversely, Quantum Resistant Cryptography (PQC) operates on intricate mathematical algorithms requiring hundreds of millions of years to decipher.

This method can be executed via software, rendering it cost-effective and readily scalable. QKD and PQC are symbiotic technologies, each complementing the other in a harmonious synergy of enhanced security, cost-efficiency, and versatility.

The duo equips quantum secure communication to effectively mitigate emerging cybersecurity threats, protecting it against potential vulnerabilities.

SK Broadband’s quantum security service offers customers options tailored to their specific yuyneeds. The quantum toolkit encompasses Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Quantum Resistant Cryptography (PQC).

Large entities, such as government agencies, public institutions, medical centers, and financial organizations, seeking ironclad security can opt for dedicated QKD lines renowned for their excellence in safeguarding data.

On the other hand, small and medium-sized businesses find a cost-effective and easy-to-scale solution in dedicated PQC lines, which require no additional hardware installation. Moreover, SK Broadband allows for a hybrid approach, where both QKD and PQC methods can coexist, ensuring comprehensive security.

SK Broadband’s strategic approach has already culminated in the formulation of terms and conditions for QKD in July of the preceding year and dedicated PQC line services in June of the current year.

As SK Broadband has ventured into quantum security solutions, it has managed to get the backing of certifications. The company, in close collaboration with SK Telecom, has earned the distinction of being the first operator in South Korea to provide Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Quantum Resistant Cryptography (PQC) leased line services equipped with cryptographic modules certified by the National Intelligence Service Cryptographic Verification Module (KCMVP).

SK Broadband, as the first in quantum security in Korea, is expected to play a role in safeguarding sensitive data across various sectors, including government, healthcare, finance, and beyond.
