Nokia, in collaboration with SK Broadband, has successfully deployed a leased line network for Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) to support its data security infrastructure. The project, finalized in August 2024, will shield KHNP’s critical IT systems from both current and future cyber threats.

The deployment leverages advanced quantum-secure technologies to safeguard against the growing risk of cyberattacks, including those powered by quantum computing.

Nokia’s Quantum-Safe Network solution was pivotal in the project, employing a defense-in-depth strategy with advanced network cryptography to counter sophisticated cyber threats. Key technologies integrated into the network included Nokia’s transmission equipment, interconnect routers and service access systems. Additionally, Nokia’s Network Services Platform (NSP) played a crucial role in simplifying operations and management, enhancing efficiency across the network.

Kim Gooyoung, Head of Enterprise Sales Division at SK Broadband, emphasized the importance of the deployment, stating, “The integration of Nokia’s Quantum-Safe MACsec cryptographic technologies with KHNP’s network will significantly enhance the security and reliability of South Korea’s critical energy infrastructure.” He highlighted the growing necessity of quantum-safe networks to protect vital systems in both the present and the upcoming quantum era.

Jay Han, Head of Nokia Korea’s Network Infrastructure business, remarked, “Protecting critical infrastructure is a hallmark of quantum-safe technology and an area we understand well at Nokia.” He pointed to the company’s expertise in delivering secure, high-performance technologies for critical infrastructure operators to shield systems from disruptions and cyberattacks.

This collaboration between Nokia and SK Broadband not only strengthens KHNP’s defenses against evolving cyber threats but also sets a benchmark for secure communications in South Korea. By integrating quantum-safe technologies, the project ensures KHNP’s infrastructure remains robust in an increasingly complex cybersecurity landscape.

Nokia is a global player in B2B technology innovation, working in networks that can sense, think, and act by leveraging advancements across mobile, fixed, and cloud networks. Its expertise is further strengthened by Nokia Bell Labs, which is known for its research and award-winning contributions to technology. With open and flexible network architectures, Nokia ensures integration into diverse ecosystems while enabling scalability and new revenue opportunities.

Trusted by service providers, enterprises, and partners worldwide, Nokia delivers secure, sustainable, and high-performance networks.
