Hyundai Mobis‘ roof airbag technology, a first of its kind invention, received certification from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The South Korean car parts maker said on Thursday that the U.S. NHSTA conducted a safety assessment on the roof airbags. The company also announced that it shared the safety features of its airbags through a report with the U.S. government, businesses, and other academic institutions. The report contained measures on alleviating passengers’ roof escape.
The U.S. NHSTA conducts studies on ways to prevent injuries and reduce economic costs caused by road traffic accidents. The government agency sets safety standards and enforcement activities to create a safer environment.
Last January, the NHSTA released a research report with the title “Status of NHTSA’s Roof Ejection Mitigation Research.” The report, presented at the 2020 SAE Government/Industry Meeting organized by the U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), introduces data on the evaluation of Hyundai Mobis’ roof airbag technology.
Roof Airbag System
According to the NHSTA report, Hyundai Mobis’ roof airbag, under various conditions, demonstrated its effectivity in preventing passengers from accidentally ejecting from a sunroof in the event of vehicle rollover. The novel airbag technology takes only 0.08 seconds to cover the entire roof from the back of the vehicle to the front.

NHSTA found that the roof airbag system could lower the risk of head and neck injury. Hyundai Mobis said the system involves 24 patented technologies and enhanced for mass-production in partnership with Inalfa Roof Systems.
Since Hyundai Mobis’ first airbags began mass-production in 2002, the company continuously focused and introduced advanced airbag technologies for the international market.
Hyundai Mobis developed the world’s first panoramic sunroof airbag in 2017, improving the performance of mass-production. Recently, the company is developing convergence technologies in safety on a full scale.
In 2019, the company finished verifying reliability including performance evaluation, durability, and environmental impact assessment of the roof airbag system. Hyundai Mobis already promoted and won orders from automobile manufacturers located in Europe, North America, and China.
