Hyundai Motor and Kia have initiated a free inspection service for electric vehicle (EV) owners following heightened safety concerns prompted by recent incidents, including an apartment fire in Cheongna International City, Incheon. Automakers, including Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis, announced this initiative to address the increasing anxiety surrounding potential EV battery fires, both domestically and globally.
Starting Tuesday, owners of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs can visit designated service centers to receive a comprehensive inspection at no cost.Â
In response to increasing safety concerns following a recent fire, South Korean government officials are urging automakers to disclose detailed battery information. Hyundai, Kia, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have voluntarily released this data, with Hyundai primarily using batteries from LG Energy Solution (LGES) and SK On, while Kia’s EVs are powered by LGES, SK, and, in some cases, CATL. Mercedes-Benz employs batteries from CATL, Farasis Energy, LGES, and SK.
The incident has prompted Mercedes Korea to join Hyundai and Kia in offering free inspections for all EV models. The inspections, which began on August 8 for Hyundai and August 9 for Kia, are available at numerous service centers nationwide. Hyundai and Genesis EV owners can visit 22 high-tech centers and 1,234 Bluehands locations, while Kia EV owners can utilize 18 manufacturer centers and 757 Auto Q branches.
The free inspection service covers nine key components, including insulation resistance, voltage stability, and cooling systems. Technicians will check the electrical insulation for potential short circuits, monitor battery cells for even charging and discharging, and inspect the undercarriage and connections for any damage. Error codes will also be reviewed to identify any issues that could impact safety.
The inspections aim to alleviate public anxiety by focusing on critical safety components. Technicians will evaluate the cooling system to ensure optimal battery temperatures, as overheating can lead to thermal runaway and fire risks. They will also inspect all connectors and cables for signs of wear or damage, which could lead to electrical arcing and pose additional fire hazards.
Hyundai Motor’s Every Care system provides further reassurance by offering replacement vehicles to customers whose EVs are destroyed by fire within the first year of ownership. Kia has implemented a similar program to address ongoing concerns about EV safety. Both companies are committed to supporting their customers and reducing fears associated with electric vehicles.
