Hanwha Systems Co. announced on Tuesday that it has secured a government license to operate as a provider of satellite-based internet services. The move comes as the company’s strategic expansion into the space internet industry, focusing on catering to military requirements.
The defense and ICT division of Hanwha Group has been granted authorization by the Ministry of Science and ICT to offer fast internet connectivity to businesses and government entities using low-Earth orbit communication satellites, the Seoul-based company announced.
Despite the absence of its own telecommunication infrastructure, Hanwha Systems has been actively gearing up to penetrate the space internet sector. Last year, the company made a substantial investment of $300 million and secured an 8.8 percent ownership stake in OneWeb, a satellite communications company headquartered in London. With the acquisition, the company planned to establish a strong presence in the space internet market.
By investing in OneWeb, Hanwha Systems aims to leverage the expertise and capabilities of the London-based company to propel its foray into the space internet business.
OneWeb, known for its cutting-edge satellite communications technology, offers a constellation of satellites that can deliver high-speed internet connectivity across the globe. Through this collaboration, Hanwha Systems seeks to tap into the growing demand for space-based internet services and expand its portfolio to cater to various sectors, including defense and government organizations.
OneWeb has already successfully deployed a substantial fleet of 634 satellites positioned in a low Earth orbit approximately 1,200 kilometers above the Earth’s surface.
Hanwha Systems has revealed that OneWeb is set to commence its global satellite internet service later this year, presenting an opportune moment for Hanwha to leverage these advanced satellite networks.
With its fleet of satellites deployed in low Earth orbit, OneWeb will offer accessible global satellite internet service, catering to the growing demands for connectivity across various sectors and geographical regions.
Hanwha Systems, known for its expertise in military communications systems, has revealed its strategic plan to construct its own satellite communication networks in low-Earth orbit.
These networks will primarily serve military applications, enabling enhanced and secure communication capabilities for defense purposes. Hanwha Systems aims to provide reliable and efficient communication services to military organizations by developing its satellite infrastructure.
In addition to its military focus, Hanwha Systems has outlined its plans to extend its satellite internet system to various business sectors, including aviation, shipping, automotive, and urban air mobility.
