The government decided to promote a hydrogen economy with two main pillars: hydrogen-electric vehicles and fuel-cells.
The government will increase the number of hydrogen powered vehicles to 6.2 million units by 2040, including 2.9 million domestically manufactured and 3.3 million exports. The production of hydrogen cars last year was about 2,000 units. More than 4,000 hydrogen powered cars will be supplied this year, while 1,200 hydrogen charging stations will be built by 2040.
Of these next gen vehicles, 80,000 hydrogen taxis, 40,000 hydrogen buses and 30,000 hydrogen trucks by 2040 are expected.
The government also plans to expand fuel cells for power generation to more than 15GW (including 7GW of export) by 2040. Fuel cells for homes and buildings will be supplied by 2.1GW (amount for about 940,000 households) by 2040. The supply of hydrogen will be expanded from 130,000 tons in 2018 to more than 5.26 million tons in 2040.
The government working to establish a reliable base for the implementation of the hydrogen. Korea is wants to have a trusted hydrogen infrastructure by strengthening safety management standards and safety assessment of components and products throughout the entire cycle.
“The hydrogen economy will again open a window of opportunity for us. Also it is a great opportunity to prepare new growth engines while fundamentally changing the national energy system.”
The Blue House also said that it bought a hydrogen car as a business vehicle and is using it.
