LG Uplus Corp. announced that it created new virtual reality (VR) content for the series Space Explorers: The ISS Experience. In September 2020, LG Uplus established the Global XR Content Telco Alliance, the first-ever international 5G extended reality (XR) partnership. In addition to being the first of its kind, the XR alliance is also the world’s largest 5G content alliance. It mainly aimed to produce outstanding virtual and augmented reality content by integrating the members’ capabilities and advanced tech.
Developing High-Quality VR Content
Moreover, the XR alliance consists of various global telecom operators, including Bell Canada and Qualcomm. Additionally, the XR alliance includes Japan’s KDDI Corporation and China’s China Telecommunications Corporation. Numerous VR content developers also participated in the project, including Canada’s Felix & Paul Studios and France’s Atlas V. This year, the XR alliance attracted Canada’s Orange, Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom, and the US’s Verizon.
LG Uplus, the XR alliance’s facilitator, formed the XR alliance to explore 5G’s high-quality storytelling possibilities. The Global XR Content Telco Alliance also plans to deliver immersive and highly engaging content to viewers in 5G-connected regions. A month after forming the XR alliance, LG Uplus released a VR series about the International Space Station (ISS).
Space Explorers: The ISS Experience depicts astronauts’ life on-board and outside the ISS in 3D 360-degree mobile format. Furthermore, LG Uplus’s new VR content features detailed information on astronauts’ weightless meals, spacecraft plant cultivation, and the sun’s heat. An astronaut with VR camera training shot the new content, delivering never-before-seen footage.
Cultivating The Growing XR Industry
“We will continue to increase the interests of customers by promoting the quantitative and qualitative growth of XR content,” said Choi Yoon-Ho, VP of LG Uplus’s XR Service Unit. Choi also added that LG Uplus would cooperate with various companies and foster the XR ecosystem to achieve this goal.
With the new VR content and an operator network spanning over seven regions, LG Uplus further reinforces its leadership in the fast-growing metaverse era. Accordingly, LG Uplus plans to promote the XR industry by delivering VR and AR content through the metaverse platform. The Global XR Content Telco Alliance would also foster the metaverse era by merging new technologies and expanding their scope.
Besides releasing new material, LG Uplus announced that Trigger, a leading XR agency, would become the XR alliance’s eleventh member. Trigger also develops innovative XR solutions, expanding the tech’s usage beyond entertainment and across various applications, including e-commerce and enterprise.
