Samsung Electronics and its associates IBM and M1 announced they had established the 5G-enabled IBM Industry 4.0 Studio. IBM is a US-based technology company, while M1 is a major Singaporean telecom firm. Since 5G offers advanced industrial connectivity, the affiliates aim to harness its capabilities to advance their technological investments and businesses. The Studio, located in Singapore, will incorporate 5G connectivity, AI, and hybrid cloud and edge computing technologies to deliver mobile and network solutions.

Industry 4.0 Solutions

Through the strategic collaboration, the three firms could advance their 5G, edge computing, and cloud expertise to help modernize businesses. Initially, Samsung has worked with IBM and M1, integrating their engineering capabilities and state-of-the-art network know-how to design 5G services. According to the companies, the Studio will simulate operational cases to help businesses utilize 5G capabilities.

The partners currently provide high-reliability and ultra-low latency technologies to address the growing automation transition in industrial operations. In partnership with Singapore’s IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority), the tech companies will utilize the Studio for innovative solution development and testing.

As part of the ongoing digital advancement, the Studio will conduct Singapore’s first 5G Industry 4.0 trials. The Studio will also assess and optimize enterprise 5G performances for commercial use and evaluate applications for manufacturing sectors. Additionally, the tech companies combined efforts could significantly enhance workplace performance, improve worker safety, and reduce production inactivity.

The Studio’s Focus Areas

“The opening of the Studio is an important milestone in applying 5G-enabled mobile and network solutions,” said K.C. Choi, Head of Samsung’s Global Mobile B2B Business. “Mobile and 5G capabilities like these are empowering workers and changing the way factories and warehouses operate, bringing new efficiency and productivity to operations.” Choi also stated that Samsung expects the project with IBM, M1, and IMDA to deliver 5G technologies to more customers.

Furthermore, Samsung revealed that the IBM Studio would focus on areas, including visual recognition, augmented reality, and other 5G-based solutions. For instance, the project will create real-time AI visual and audio recognition systems, enabling faster defect identification in production lines. Aside from recognition technologies, the Studio will collaborate with other firms to develop 3D augmented reality platforms and related procedure models.

In addition to creating 5G-based solutions, the Studio will tap into collaborative robot manufacturing to upgrade production performance and quality. IBM’s Industry 4.0 Studio will also utilize automated guided vehicle software to help in manufacturing operations.
