SK Network’s chairman, Chey Shin-won met with Brazil’s controversial president Jair Bolsonaro to discuss possible business opportunities in the country. The meeting was also a way to determine possible ties between SK and Brazil in the future. Company’s representatives announced the meeting last Friday.
Chey’s meeting with the president was, however, not the primary reason for chairman Chey’s presence in the South American country. Chey attended the celebration ceremony of the first anniversary of the King Sejong Institute. KSI is a public institution sponsored by the Korea-Brazil Society (KOBRAS) which Chey also heads. The purpose of the institution was to promote the Korean language and culture to foreign countries.
“I will do my best to boost bilateral ties and expand business opportunities in Brazil, a country that has strong potential for growth,” Chey said. He also congratulated South Korea and Brazil for the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
“I hope the two countries develop cooperation in a mutually beneficial manner,” Bolsonaro said.
Chey pledged to help Brazil establish a sustainable business environment and provide business start-ups the platform to grow.
Chey was awarded membership in the honorific Order of Rio Branco in Brazil during 2015. It was a way for the country to thank Chey for his role in advancing business and cultural exchanges between Brazil and Korea.
