South Korea’s SK Telecom announced a partnership with Samsung Electronics to enhance 5G network quality using artificial intelligence (AI). This collaboration introduces Samsung’s AI-RAN Parameter Recommender to SK Telecom’s commercial network, an AI-driven tool designed to optimize base station performance by analyzing historical mobile network data.
The AI-RAN Parameter Recommender adjusts settings for 5G base stations, tailoring configurations to specific network demands. By implementing this technology, SK Telecom aims to provide more reliable and efficient 5G connectivity, highlighting the growing role of AI in telecommunications.
SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics have used AI and deep learning to improve mobile network operations by analyzing historical performance data. Recently, they developed technology that recommends optimal parameters specific to each base station’s environment, addressing unique conditions like terrain and nearby infrastructure that can impact network quality despite standardized equipment.
The AI-based tool, Samsung’s Network Parameter Optimization Model, streamlines resource allocation to keep extensive mobile networks in peak condition. Initial trials have shown a 5G base station performance boost, leading to better network quality for users. By analyzing SK Telecom’s network data, the deep learning model adapts the AI solution to various radio environments, ensuring reliable service across diverse locations.
Looking ahead, the companies plan to deploy this technology in high-traffic areas with fluctuating usage patterns, such as subway systems, to further assess its effectiveness.Â
Ryu Tak-ki, head of infrastructure technology at SK Telecom, emphasized the impact of AI integration, stating, “This achievement is significant as it confirms that we can maximize the potential performance of individual base stations by integrating AI.” He added that SK Telecom aims to drive the shift toward an “AI-Native Network,” combining telecommunications with AI to offer a superior customer experience.
SK Telecom’s AI-driven solution enhances radio network performance by dynamically adjusting base station signal power when weak signals or data transmission errors arise due to interference. This automatic adjustment helps maintain reliable connectivity, ensuring a consistent user experience even in challenging radio environments.
Beyond network optimizations, SK Telecom is integrating AI into its consumer services. In August, it relaunched its AI assistant app, “A.” or “A-DoT,” designed to streamline everyday tasks with voice-activated appointment management and other personalized features. The upgraded app includes multiple conversational agents, each offering unique AI capabilities, allowing users to compare and customize responses to fit their specific needs.
