5G users top 17M in July as per ICT ministry data

The 5 G subscriptions in South Korea have taken a big jump in the past few months. The user base has continued to expand, and the number reached over 18 million users in July, as per the recent research report by data from the Ministry of Science and ICT. The data was made public on Wednesday. 

The pace of 5G network expansion had already gained the second position in its customer growth ever since the technology was introduced to the market. Its usage expansion is projected to accelerate by December owing to the upcoming devices launched in the Korean tech market. 

The total number of 5G subscribers was at 17.08 million in July, after around a million getting added to the user base from June. It sums up to be 24% of overall mobile network subscriptions in the country, which is at 71.71 million presently. That’s quite a big part. 

In April 2019, South Korea commercially introduced 5G networks to the market. The country with a 51.3 million population has managed to make 5G available in 85 cities around the country. 

The country’s leading market player, SK Telecom Co, has only 8 million subscribers despite controlling a large area in the Korean telecom market. SK Telecom Co. presently tops the 5G leaderboard while KT Corp. ranks second at 5.2 million, followed by LG Uplus Corp at 3.8 million. 

Samsung Electronics Co recently launched Galaxy Z Flip3 and Galaxy Z in fold3, which has created a lot of buzz in the market. According to market experts, such launches will boost the expansion of the 5G user base in the coming months. 

The new smartphones have received massive demand in the market, having around 800K pre-orders that took not more than one August week. Another market giant, Apple, will be launching the next iPhone device in the coming month, which is apparently inducing users to migrate to 5G networks. 

The data revealed by the ICT ministry stated earlier, the download speed of the 5G network was 690.47 Mbps in the South Korean market. Reportedly, this standard 5G download speed has peaked at 808.45 megabits per second in the two quarters.
